3 Must-Ask Interview Questions

Penulis : Unknown on Tuesday, 8 January 2013 | 01:20

Tuesday, 8 January 2013

An obvious reason for asking questions of your potential boss during an interview is to show preparedness and enthusiasm  for the position. Another, often forgotten, purpose of asking questions is to decide if the position is a good fit for you. Interviewing is a two way street and you must ask questions that can help you decide if you are compatible with the company and the people you could be working with if hired.

Here are 3 great questions to explore compatibility:

How would you inform me if you had a problem with something I did?

An encouraging answer may be that they would speak with you privately about the issue and how to fix the problem or improve for next time. It may be a red flag if they say that they will discuss it during a staff meeting or let you keep making the same mistake until you figured it out on your own.

What words would you use to describe the employers who you supervise?

What you want to hear as answer to this question may vary greatly but it is safe to say many would like to hear words like hardworking, talented, or essential. A red flag answer to this question may be descriptors that indicate they have a low opinion of their staff or value characteristics that differ greatly from your own.

If hired, what are some things you are expecting to see from me in the first few months?

Ideally their answer will match your objectives for the positions and the type of working environment you would like to be employed. A potential red flag here is if their expectation far exceeded an acceptable amount of work and or if they cannot give you an idea of the expectations. This question lets you get a better understanding of the company’s work mentality and work pace.

Prepping for the Phone Interview

Phone interviews are just as important as in person interviews.  Usually the employer will utilize phone interviews as a screening tool so they can compile the best list of candidates to bring in for the in person interview.  You should prepare for the phone interview as you would for a face to face meeting with an employer.
Preparation is crucial before you take the call. Research the company and study the job description. Know your best assets and create a list of your accomplishments and skills you wish to highlight to the employer.  Think about how your best skills can be used within the company.
Dress as if you were going to an in person interview.  Feeling professional will get you thinking like a professional.  Make sure your phone has a full battery and you have good cell phone reception.  If you prefer, use a landline. Find a quiet place where there will be no distractions.
During the interview, it can be helpful to have information in front of you to reference while you compose your answers.  It is a good idea to have your resume handy, questions to ask the employer, and a list of your accomplishments.  Additionally, writing the name of the interviewer down is always a good idea.  You also might like to have the job description in front of you as well as the company website.
Make sure you can hear the interviewers and that you are clear on what is being asked.  If necessary, have them repeat the question or wait for a few seconds as you collect your thoughts.  As long as you prepare, be respectful, and think critically about your responses, the phone interview should go smoothly.

How To Start Your Job Search Right In 2013

Here are things to do NOW to maximize your job search chances in 2013:

1. Think.

Confirm your target industry and the job function you want to go for. Decide on your ideal lifestyle, work environment and compensation. Identify your career objectives and weigh these against any family or financial constraints. (For example, what does your cash balance imply about how long you have to search?)

2. Update your marketing materials.

It’s not just about the resume. You also need an online profile, a networking pitch, and a cover letter template. You may need a more professional LinkedIn photo, or you may need to adjust your settings or learn how to use special features and applications. During the holidays, your networking should be focused on developing rapport—you shouldn’t go to parties to talk about your job hunt. But you will need a way to talk about yourself and your job search in the follow-up meetings you schedule after the holidays, and now is the time to develop it. In addition to a cover letter template, you need a cover email template that is much shorter than the traditional letter. Refine your marketing material now, before you hit the market in force in 2013.

3. Research your target companies and industries.

You need to be ready to talk to people at the start of January in a way that shows you know their industry, their company and their concerns. Your marketing preparation will enable you to identify your skills, expertise and accomplishments; you need the research to translate how your skills, expertise and accomplishments will bring value to your target companies.

4. Organize your network.

Input all those new contacts from your holiday networking into a comprehensive contact database. Identify and prioritize who you will follow up with in January, February and onward. See who you haven’t yet reconnected with and plan a holiday mailing now to rekindle connections in an unassuming way in advance of the new year push.

5. Get your “office” in order.

If you are unemployed, your job search is your full-time job. Organize your workspace with enough light and adequate supplies. Know when you do your best work so you can schedule your job search activity for the appropriate times. Choose a contact management system for your networking and build a spreadsheet or paper system to track what you’re doing.

10 best career tips for freshers

Penulis : Unknown on Wednesday, 19 December 2012 | 10:39

Wednesday, 19 December 2012

You are fresh out college and you are seeing the world with rose tinted glasses. The time as a fresh graduate is often the most exciting time of your life. However, if you are not careful, you could be living a life you were not meant to, or find your dreams come crashing down.

For those of you who have just entered the job market, here are some tips that will help you survive and realize your goals:

  1. Make sure you keep learning- Learning does not stop with the end of college. In fact, if you are serious about taking your career to new heights, make sure you keep learning and adding skills to your profile. As your skills grow, so will your career.

  2. Adopt a professional attitude- Making the transition from care free days of college to the corporate world can be difficult. However, the transition is essential. Make sure you adopt a professional attitude from day 1. It will keep you in good stead.

  3. Have goals for 2 years, 5 years and 10 years- When you are driving without a destination in mind, you end up reaching nowhere. It is important to have goals in mind in order to streamline your career path. Don’t be rigid about these goals though, as it could lead to undue stress.

  4. Don’t be afraid to take risks- the best time to take risks is when you are still new in the job market. You do not have a reputation and you do not have many responsibilities either. Take risks and explore new avenues. You never know what you might stumble across.

  5. Have an investment strategy- It is possible that in the future, you may decide to switch careers. It is also entirely possible that there is a slow-down in the economy which leads to layoffs and job cuts. It is important to have an investment strategy in place to tide over these tough times.

  6. Learn a new language- The business world is getting increasingly globalized. In order to increase your chances of flying abroad on an official trip, learn a new language. While French and German are the usual bets, try learning something offbeat if you can, like Chinese, Japanese, or even Spanish.

  7. Always develop connections- No matter where you are working, always be in the habit of developing connections. Even after you leave the job, stay in touch with your seniors. It will help you get ahead in life.

  8. Don’t take life too seriously- Sometimes, when we take life too seriously, we are prone to anxiety attacks and stress. Work hard and leave the rest to destiny. Sometimes, you just need to learn to go with the flow.

  9. Always keep updating your resume- As you progress in your career, make sure you keep updating your resume with key achievements and added skills. It will come in handy for your next job search.

  10. Try and stay in a company for at least 2 years- Job hopping has become a trend these days. However, organizations still value employees who are ready for long term commitment. Try and stay in an organization for at least 2 years. It looks good on your resume.

Importance of English language in the job market

ndia is one of the few countries which have two official languages- Hindi and English. However, the official business language of the world is English. With India fast becoming a global economy, it comes as no surprise that companies are increasingly focusing on English language skills of candidates.

Whether you are vouching for a government job, or a job in the corporate sector, having English language skills is of paramount importance. Companies do not expect candidates to be proficient in English with a rich vocabulary. All they expect from them is to have good sense of the language while speaking and writing.

If you haven’t paid attention to your English language skills so far, here are some reasons why it is important for your career:

There is fierce competition in the same skill set

Every year, India churns out lakhs of engineers, most of them having the same skill set. The same goes for other fields too. In the government sector too, every year, lakhs of candidates sit for bank PO exams, civil services exams etc. It is often the English language skills which separate these candidates. A candidate who is fluent in written and spoken English is always preferred by most organizations, since most communication in offices happens in English language.

You get global opportunities

The world is increasingly becoming a small place. Today, job opportunities are not just limited to India alone, although you may have completed your education here. A whole lot of other countries have Indian workers employed in scores. The US economy is a good example of Indian people making their mark globally. However, to make the most of a globalised job market, English language skills are critical. You cannot hope to survive in a foreign land without having a grip on the language.

It is important for a faster career growth

If you think you can make fast progress in your career based solely on your talent and skills, you are wrong. Companies increasingly prefer candidates with good soft skills, English language being an important part of that. The ability to communicate well in English opens the path to faster progress in your chosen field.

There are immense opportunities for self employment

With English language skills, there are immense opportunities for self employment as well. In fact, most work-from-home jobs require decent levels of spoken and written English. Some hot self employment options for those good in English include English trainer, content writing, blogger etc. You can make a sizeable amount of money with each of these self employment options.

The importance of English language in the job market cannot be undermined. For those of you who find it tough to come to grips with the language, reading a lot will help matters. Start out with simple books or topics that interest you. Over time, you will be able to comprehend the language much better, improving your skills in the process.

How can I get the right job in IT sector?

IT sector is one of the hottest fields in India. Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest firm in the IT sector, alone employs more than 1 lakh people. The number of skilled workers employed by the IT sector in India is expected to grow further in the next 5-10 years. If you are looking for a robust career in the IT sector, the following tips can help you land the right job in the field:

Get a professional degree in IT

Most big IT firms in India such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro etc. prefer candidates with a professional degree in IT. Get a BE, BTech, Bsc. Computer Science or other similar degrees in order to get one step closer to a job in the IT sector. Most of these big companies hire people through campus interviews. Thus, it always helps if you get a professional qualification from a reputed institute in the country.

Specialize after graduation

It is not mandatory to get a post graduate degree in IT after graduation. However, if you are looking for a good start to your career in IT, it also helps to get a post graduate degree, preferably an MCA. An MCA degree helps you specialize in one particular field of IT, which boosts your chances of finding a good job with a fat pay packet.

Utilize social networking

Companies in almost every industry are replying more and more on social networks to find the right candidates for a job. Don’t undermine the importance of social networking, especially professional networks like Linkedin. Network actively on Linkedin and highlight your skills and strengths in order to grab the attention of employers.

Don’t lose touch with your seniors

Many times, companies decide to recruit through referrals than going through consultancies. This helps them save hiring costs. Moreover, a referral is always given higher priority. Make sure you don’t lose touch with your seniors since they can help you find a good job in the IT sector.

Power up your resume

A good resume is essential, whether you are looking for a job in the IT sector or somewhere else. Make sure you highlight the projects you have handled in your college years, and the skills you have learnt. Apart from that, highlight any add-ons such as good communication skills, or good managerial skills, as companies are always looking for candidates with something extra.

Diploma holders need not be disappointed

If you are just a diploma holder in the IT sector, you need not get too disappointed. If you know one or two computer languages such as Java, C++ etc., you could still find a suitable job in the IT sector. It will just take that little bit longer, but if you have the skills, companies would be more than willing to hire you.

Keep the above pointers in mind when looking to build a career in the IT sector. They will help you have a stable and fruitful career ahead of you.
